Judging Process

The International Student Artist Awards is committed to providing a fair, consistent, and thoughtful judging process. All eligible entries go through multiple stages of review before the final winners are selected.

Pre-Judging Review

Before judging begins, all submitted artworks undergo an initial compliance review.

During this stage:

  • Submissions are checked to ensure they meet all contest requirements.

  • Submitted artworks may be screened for indications of AI-generated or AI-assisted artwork.

  • Entries may be reviewed for potential copyright infringement or unauthorized use of another artist's work.

  • Submissions are checked for compliance with the required file format, file naming, and submission guidelines.

Important: File Naming Compliance

Submissions must follow the file-naming requirements stated in the contest rules. Files with filenames that do not comply with the required naming format were not opened, reviewed, or judged. Such submissions are considered non-compliant and do not advance to the judging process.

Entries that fail to meet the contest requirements may be disqualified during the pre-judging review and will not proceed to the judging rounds.

First Round — Individual Evaluation

In the first round, each eligible artwork is evaluated individually by the judging panel.

Judges consider the following criteria:

  • Artistic Skill — Drawing ability, technique, craftsmanship, use of materials, and control of the chosen medium.

  • Creativity — Imagination, artistic ideas, visual expression, and the ability to communicate an original concept.

  • Originality — Individuality, personal expression, and the uniqueness of the artwork.

Artworks are evaluated according to the participant's grade level, allowing students to be assessed among peers at a similar stage of artistic development.

Second Round — Grade-Level Finalist Selection

After the first-round evaluations are completed, artworks selected to advance are separated into their respective grade levels.

The number of artworks advancing to the second round may differ between grade levels. The number of advancing entries is not required to be equal across all grades and may depend on the quality and overall strength of the submissions within each grade.

For example, one grade may have more artworks advance to the second round than another grade if the judges determine that a larger number of submissions demonstrate the level of artistic skill, creativity, and originality required to continue.

During the second round, judges conduct a comparative review of the advancing artworks within each grade category. Judges consider:

  • Artistic skill and technical execution

  • Creativity and visual expression

  • Originality and personal artistic voice

  • Overall quality and impact of the finished artwork

The second round determines the final winners within each grade level.

Final Selection

Final award recipients are selected based on the judges' evaluations and the overall strength of the submitted artwork.

The judging process is designed to recognize students who demonstrate artistic ability, creative thinking, originality, and a strong understanding of traditional art-making skills.

All judging decisions are final.
